5 Great athletes from hampton roadsOne great thing about our region is our abundance of athletes that go on to play professionally. There is no shortgage. From Super Bowl rings to NBA Finals Appearances to World Series appearances, Hampton Roads has it all. In no particular order, here are 5 great athletes from Hampton Roads.
David Wright (Major League Baseball) Originally from Chesapeake, Wright has been a mainstay at third base for the New York Mets. Although Colin Cowherd refers to the Mets as a "low self-esteem" franchise, the Mets have something to boast about in Wright. He's been one of their only consistent players for more than a decade and should enter the Hall of Fame when his playing days are over. Percy Harvin (National Football League) Harvin's from Virginia Beach and trained racing up and down Mount Trashmore. He was a star at Landstown High School and was injury prone in the NFL, but had several pivotal playoff moments with the Vikings and Brett Farve and the Seattle Seahwaks with Russell Wilson. Wide receiver/running back. Was similar to Reggie Bush. Justin Upton (Major League Baseball) Another Chesapeake baseball player -- Justin, the little brother of BJ Upton, has held his own in the big leagues. He plays outfield, has a solid bat, speed, and a cannon of an arm. He will be questionable to earn his way into the Hall of Fame. Michael Vick (National Football League) We all know this name. Yes, Mike Vick was AMAZING and dazzling in the league. He went to Warwick High School in Newport News and then Virginia Tech, where he really shined. He got Virginia Tech to prominence as a national program, and honestly, a place they really have not been back to. Fellow Peninsula native Tyrod Taylor (another great athlete) helped VA Tech do very well, but not to the level of Vick. Vick was incredible. Allen Iverson (National Basketball Association) AI -- my brother had Iverson's on his high school basketball team. Iverson was a star-studded football player at Bethel High School but chose basketball. And that makes sense, considering how dominant he was in the NBA. Some say there never has been as fierce a competitor as "Bubbachuck." If you have not seen it, you should watch the documentary "Iverson." |
