Chesapeake, Virginia

Picture

Here's the low-down on Chesapeake. It was rated the #2 Most Boring City in the United States of America according to Movoto Real Estate. But here's another thing: Chesapeake is widely-known as having some of the best schools in the region, most notably Hickory High School, Grassfield High School, and Great Bridge High School.

So, as you can imagine, many young couples live in Norfolk, and then head to Chesapeake for the suburban life. Or for those who want the best of both worlds, they choose Virginia Beach, who also has solid public schools. As a result, Chesapeake house values range from $150,000 for a small single family home to $600,000 for a 3,000+ square foot single family home. A house in the more popular school districts start at $250,000 and quickly go up.

Chesapeake is Fun, Too

Fun is subjective, right? The study that gave Chesapeake such a high-boring rating looked at availability of public parks, arts, and more offerings like that. Well, if a city has public parks but they aren't kept up, then the city would be better off getting rid of them. And Chesapeake is fun. There's some great golf courses, including the Greenbrier Golf Club and Cahoon Plantaintation. Aside from golf, people love it because it's only about 1 1/2 hours driving distance to Nags Head, or the Outer Banks, in North Carolina. Many southern Virginian's flock to these North Carolina beaches, and living in Chesapeake gets you close to there. There is plenty of shopping in Chesapeake -- it has all of the usual chains, some nice locally-owned places, and a big shopping mall at Greenbrier Mall (right off Interstate 64). Tidewater Community College, the region's largest community college, has a big campus right off Cedar Road in Chesapeake. Here's another thing: Chesapeake is huge. It's the third most populated city in the State of Virginia.

A Big Suburb

Chesapeake is really a big suburb. It's like Reston in Northern Virginia. Close to the action of the big city, but far enough away for a slower pace with more roads, trees, and fewer city lights. With seven high schools, several private schools, and its massive land mass (second largest city by land mass), Chesapeake is an excellent choice for a quarter million residents. And it could be for you, too. There are some tremendous neighborhoods, at different price points. There's a Sparrow Road off Indian River Road, which borders Virginia Beach and Norfolk. Or there's Western Branch, which is really closer to Suffolk and Portsmouth than Virginia Beach and Norfolk. Or for new construction, Tuckahoe Village Community is a brand new community in Great Bridge.

I've never lived in Chesapeake. But I've spent a lot time in the city, and its country roads, playing baseball, with family, and showing houses. Chesapeake is a great place to call home. It's only 20 minutes to Norfolk, 20 minutes to Virginia Beach, and 20 minutes to Suffolk.
